Most Popular Questions Asked

Q

What surface textures and colors are available?

A

Pilkington Profilit™ is available in the following surface textures: Standard (lightly dimpled surface), Macro (netted screen surface), Slim Line (thin, linear grooves), Wave (corrugated, shaped texture), and Clear (no visible texture). Standard channel glass has an inherent slight green hue, while color coatings and nearly colorless Pilkington Profilit OW (Low-Iron) glass is also available. Visit tgpamerica.com to view all Pilkington Profilit Design Options as well as the online Texture Tool.

Q

What high performance coatings are available?

A

Two high performance surface coatings are available for Pilkington Profilit. Low-E is a coating that improves energy efficiency by improving U-Values of the glass. It reflects infrared (IR) light (heat energy) back into the building during the cold months and reflects or absorbs energy from the outside reducing solar gain into the building during the summer months. Antisol® coating is translucent bronze in color and reduces the total solar radiation transmittance into the building. Sandblasting is not available on glass that features these coatings.

Q

What is the longest length Pilkington Profilit can be installed in an application?

A

The glass is manufactured in up to 23 ft (7 m) lengths; however, the building design load will determine the maximum length that can be used in a particular application.

Q

Are there different widths and depths of glass available?

A

The glass is available in two depths, a 41 mm flange and a 60 mm flange; there are a number of face widths available that can be seen at tgpamerica.com.

Q

Can Pilkington Profilit be installed in a single glazed version?

A

Pilkington Profilit can be single or dual glazed for interior use or exterior applications depending on project requirements.

Q

Can Pilkington Profilit be installed in a radius or serpentine application?

A

Yes, the framing can be roll formed to a radius as tight as 6'6" and the glass will segment around this radius. Serpentine applications are also possible.

Q

Can Pilkington Profilit be installed horizontally?

A

Horizontally glazed Pilkington Profilit can be installed in a dual glazed arrangement, up to 13 feet in length, or up to the length specified in our wind load charts for high design load areas. Special framing members are used for horizontal applications, see architectural specification manual for details.

Q

Does Pilkington Profilit comply with impact safety glazing codes?

A

Pilkington Profilit is available in a tempered version that complies with the ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16CFR1201 (Category l & ll) impact rating test standards. TGP also offers Pilkington Profilit with an applied safety film that complies with ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16CFR1201 (Category l & ll) test standards and offers fall-out protection.

Q

Can Pilkington Profilit be heat soak tested?

A

To minimize the possibility of spontaneous breakage caused by Nickel Sulfide (NiS) inclusions found in tempered glass, the heat soak test is applied at the tempering facility. Heat soaking may cause breakage of the glass during the production process, rather than after the material is delivered to the job site for installation. While it is unlikely, it must be noted that spontaneous breakage may still occur with tempered glass that has been subjected to the heat soak test.

Q

Can Pilkington Profilit be made more obscure?

A

Yes, the inner surface of the glass can be sandblasted and treated with a polymer type of protective coating, or an opaque film can be applied to achieve increased obscurity. Sandblasting can be applied to all textures (unless they have a surface-applied specialty coating). Any glass with a pryolitic coating can not be sandblasted as the coating would be damaged.

Q

Can Pilkington Profilit be insulated?

A

Lumira® aerogel, manufactured by Cabot Corporation, is the lightest weight and best insulating solid in the world. Manufactured with translucent silica particles that are 5% solids and 95% air, it is ideal for daylighting applications. Lumira aerogel filled polycarbonate panels are available as high performance insulation for the Pilkington Profilit system. TGP is the exclusive distributor of Lumira aerogel for use in channel glass.

Q

Has Pilkington Profilit been tested?

A

This system has been tested and complies with a variety of AAMA certified tests. These include: air, water, structural, thermal, seismic, acoustic, and safety. These certified test reports are available upon request. In addition to these tests, the Pilkington Profilit system is approved by California DSA for use in public school projects and Pilkington Profilit Hurricane complies with Miami/ Dade hurricane impact testing. In addition to the listed tests, several project specific test reports are available upon request.

Q

What is the u-value?

A

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE) and the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) have different methods to test the thermal performance of fenestration. ASHRAE standards are recognized by the IBC for commercial construction and do not test the fenestration assembly, rather the center of the glazing. NFRC, however, tests not only the glazing but the test results include the U-Values from the frame system as well. Select Pilkington Profilit assemblies are NFRC certified. Pilkington Profilit U-Values for both standards are as follows:

NFRC:
Standard cast over standard cast =.53
Standard cast over standard cast with Low-E =.42
Standard cast over standard cast, Low-E with 16 mm Lumira aerogel insulation =.32
ASHRAE:
Standard cast over standard cast =.49
Standard cast over standard cast with Low-E =.40
Standard cast over standard cast, Low-E with 16 mm Lumira aerogel insulation =.21

Q

What are the performance values of a Pilkington Profilit system?

A

Charts showing CRF and SHGC performance values for Pilkington Profilit configurations can be seen on tgpamerica.com.

Q

Are thermally broken framing as well as non-thermally broken framing available?

A

Yes, all of our framing is available in either thermally broken or non-thermally broken versions.

Q

What is the material lead-time?

A

Lead-time will be determined at the time the order is placed.

Q

How much does an installed Pilkington Profilit system cost?

A

Pricing depends on the geographic location of the installation. Due to a wide-range of labor rates, this cost can vary quite a bit. The material cost is generally half of the installed cost. In most cases, the installed cost is comparable to curtain wall pricing. Prior to providing budget prices, it is recommended that budgets from local glaziers are obtained.

Q

Who can provide a price for Pilkington Profilit projects?

A

Contact TGP at 800-426-0279 or sales@tgpamerica.com, and we can recommend a qualified glazier in your area.
